Before I was baptized in The Holy Spirit during the summer of 1989, I experienced praying as something force upon me as a Christian. I experience little, if any, joy about praying. One of the reasons was probably my fairly negative focused prayers, and the fact that I felt it was something I had to do. I always prayed a small prayer before I went to bed. Sometimes I forgot to pray, and if I woke up in the middle of the night remembering that I had forgotten it, I hurried to pray just a little tiny prayer before I could go to sleep again. I do not think this is God’s design for a prayer life, which is something I have personally experienced.
My aim with this teaching is to give you some advise about how you can experience a prayer life which is far from boring and dry.
When I was around 17 years old a preacher came to a youth meeting at my church. After the sermon he opened up for questions. I remember well that I had different prayer issues that I felt God did not give me any answer to, and I was really wondering why. One of the other youths came with the revealing question; ”Why are not all our prayers answered, and why are not all people who are prayed for, healed?” The preacher’s answer was very short; ”I do not know.” I remember feeling frustrated about this answer. Is it impossible to know why God does not answer some prayers? Is God’s thoughts really that much higher than my thoughts that it is impossible to understand Him and His will? (Is 55:7-11)
Since then I have spent some time thinking about this issue, and my conclusion is that there are some answers to why God does not always answer prayers.
Eph 5:17
17Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the Lord's will is.
Another way of saying this is that if we are sensible and clear sighted, we will be able to understand God’s will. Hence, it must be possible to know why we do not always receive answers to our prayers. There has to be some principles.
Still, I have some ”I do not know” when it comes to this, and there are some questions I am going to ask God about when I enter Heaven, if I cannot get an answer down here. I will at least be able to see the big picture when I come to heaven.
One of the books in the Bible, which answers this question, is the book of James. Maybe it’s not the book we enjoy the most hearing from, but it’s still a part of the Bible, and I believe for a reason.
Be concrete
James starts his letter by saying
James 1:5-8
5If any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to him. 6But when he asks, he must believe and not doubt, because he who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind. 7That man should not think he will receive anything from the Lord; 8he is a double-minded man, unstable in all he does.
It is easy to doubt sometimes, isn’t it? It is really easy to feel condemned by this scripture. But remember, God does not condemn, but He wishes to give us greater faith that we might not doubt.
I believe it is important to be concrete and know what you want. If you do not know if you want an answer or not to your specific prayer, it is the same as unbelief, and then you cannot expect an answer. God asks what do you want and what can I do for you?
This is the truth I have discovered: When I have doubted what I really want, and when I have not been specific, nothing has happened. But also, when I have prayed specifically and known what I want, often what I wanted came to pass.
One example was when I needed more supporters for my ministry. There was a day when I was talking to God about this, He said to me ”What amount of money do you want each month?” At first I thought maybe 500 NOK, but then I decided that I needed at least another 1000 NOK in addition to what I already had. So I answered God and said ”I want an additional 1000 NOK each month from one partner”. That night a guy came up to me and told me that he wanted to support me with 1000 NOK a month.
God gave me a concrete answer. Concrete prayers are what James is asking for in this scripture.
Pray according to God’s will
Next scripture is maybe not any more gentle than the previously one, but there is a serious truth in these verses:
James 4:3-4
3When you ask, you do not receive, because you ask with wrong motives, that you may spend what you get on your pleasures.
4You adulterous people, don't you know that friendship with the world is hatred toward God? Anyone who chooses to be a friend of the world becomes an enemy of God
The words here speak for themselves. It is possible to pray wrong. We will not get what we pray for if we pray according to our own selfish will.
We need to know God’s will when we pray (Rom 12:2, Eph 5:17).
We also need to search ourselves sometimes, and ask if we are friends of the world. This does not mean that it is bad or wrong to have non-Christian friends, but the question is if we compromise our faith for the sake of keeping the peace. This means: Do you live in sin in any area of your life? I’m not talking about falling in a sin, we all do that at times, but constantly committing a sin you are aware of without caring about it. One example could be to have sex before or outside marriage, without accepting this as a sin.
The key to prayer answers is humility
Be humble
James 4:6-8
6But he gives us more grace. That is why Scripture says:
"God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble."
7Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. 8Come near to God and he will come near to you. Wash your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded.
It is important to have the right attitude when we pray. If we have sin we have not dealt with in our lives, we have a wrong attitude and will not receive any answer, despite the fact that we may pray according to God’s will.
When you approach God in prayer, ask if there is anything you need to deal with. If (not necessarily every time) He reminds you about something, dare to humiliate yourself and deal with the sin God is reminding you about. Maybe you have said something that hurt another person. Then you need to work things out with this person before you approach God again with you requests (Matt 5:23-24).
Deal with the sin
It has already been mentioned that humility is a crucial factor. Therefore it is important to deal with sins in our lives constantly so that God can answer our prayers.
Mark 11:24-26
24Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask for in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours. 25And when you stand praying, if you hold anything against anyone, forgive him, so that your Father in heaven may forgive you your sins.
Jesus says here that we will get whatever we pray for, but there can be one hindrance. If we do not deal with our sins, for example by not forgiving someone, God will not answer.
The following scripture also talks about confessing our sins before we can receive answer to prayer.
James 5:13-16
13Is any one of you in trouble? He should pray. Is anyone happy? Let him sing songs of praise. 14Is any one of you sick? He should call the elders of the church to pray over him and anoint him with oil in the name of the Lord. 15And the prayer offered in faith will make the sick person well; the Lord will raise him up. If he has sinned, he will be forgiven. 16Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous man is powerful and effective.
The self-pity sin
In the case you do not know it: Self-pity is a sin, and this sin can, just like any sin, hinder your prayer life. If you indirectly think that you deserve to get an answer, or that God has to feel pity on you because of all the bad stuff you have gone through, you are on the wrong track. God feels sorry for you, but He will not answer your prayer just because you have experienced so many worse things than everyone else. You probably have not experienced more bad stuff that anyone else either, because most of us go trough hard times in life.
Self-pity is probably one of the sins that most of us struggle with, more or less, and it has been one of the worst sins for myself. From experience I know that it can be a huge trap and the source of many problems. But I have also seen in my own life that there is a way out of it, which self-pity thoughts diminish both in amount and strength. I was able to capture the thought before to much harm was done, but still it has led to some difficulties in my life.
Self-pity often leads one to manipulate others and even tries to manipulate God; “You have to do this for me because I’m in such bad condition.” It can almost reach the point (it almost did for me) that someone will say: “If you do not help me, I do not want to live any longer.”
It’s a hard struggle to start fighting self-pity, especially if it has ruled your mind for a while. But remember that God will never give up on you and He wants you to be victorious in this area, as in every area, and He will always support you. Begin to accept what the Truth says about you, instead of the lies of the enemy.
You are righteous!!
This scripture reveals a great encouragement: “The prayer of a righteous man is powerful and effective.” “Am I righteous?” You may ask, “I though I was nothing but a sinner?” This is the mindset the Devil wants us to have. He wants you to believe that your prayer has no effect. In the moment you accept Jesus as you lord and savior you also receive his righteousness. It is not your own righteousness we are talking about here, but Jesus’ righteousness, which we receive by grace. That means that we receive it despite the fact that we do not deserve it. As long as we live in the light and do not allow sin to attach to our lives but are willing to constantly deal with the sin, we are righteous in front of the Holy One. That is why your prayers is powerful and has a grate effect. Receive and accept this fact.
Put on the breastplate of righteousness! (Eph 6:14)
Endurance
James 5:7
7Be patient, then, brothers, until the Lord's coming. See how the farmer waits for the land to yield its valuable crop and how patient he is for the autumn and spring rains.
Endurance is maybe one of the most important things when it comes to receiving answers to prayer. For people living in the western world today the concept of endurance can be hard to grasp, because the western world has become an instant world. We have instant food, instant coffee, and microwave in order to cook fast. We have fast cars and planes in order to travel fast and efficient. We are trained to expect everything to be done in a hurry, in less than as little time as possible. But this is not how praying works. The answer can delay. If it does, it is important not to give up, but instead continue to pray. This is what faith is; to not see the answer yet but not give up before you have received the answer. Abraham stands out as an example of a man in the Bible who had endurance. He believed and trusted God, even though the promise delayed several years before it came to pass (Rom 4:13-23, Heb 11:8-13). One reason why an answer can delay can be because of resistance in the spiritual realm, as Daniel experienced (Dan 10).
Do not give up
This point, almost, overlaps with the previous one about endurance, but this is more an active endurance and emphasizes the importance of endurance. Endurance is a choice to not give up, independently of circumstances and situations, as human eyes perceive them. We have to choose to endure in prayer and not give up, even though it may take a while. Jesus once told a parable about a widow who did not give up:
Luk 18:1-8
1Then Jesus told his disciples a parable to show them that they should always pray and not give up. 2He said: "In a certain town there was a judge who neither feared God nor cared about men. 3And there was a widow in that town who kept coming to him with the plea, `Grant me justice against my adversary.'
4"For some time he refused. But finally he said to himself, `Even though I don't fear God or care about men, 5yet because this widow keeps bothering me, I will see that she gets justice, so that she won't eventually wear me out with her coming!' "
6And the Lord said, "Listen to what the unjust judge says. 7And will not God bring about justice for his chosen ones, who cry out to him day and night? Will he keep putting them off? 8I tell you, he will see that they get justice, and quickly. However, when the Son of Man comes, will he find faith on the earth?"
This is enduring faith! Do not give up in the face of struggle.
A small sidetrack: When Jesus says, “will he really find faith on the earth,” He does not mean believers, or if there will be anyone at all who believe in Him when He comes back. Rather He is wondering about if there will be any with such enduring faith as this widow when he comes back. This is not meant as a prophecy either, but as a rhetorical question.
Do not dictate God
I have heard people say that if God does not do it this way, I will not consider it an answer. I believe that an answer is many times closer than we think, but because we want it to be our way, we do not see it. It is impossible to dictate God and not necessarily either. His way of replying is the best one, always! There are few times I received an answer identical to the one I expected. God often knows an easier and better way of answering our prayer than what we expect. We have expected answers to prayer to be something that should be very special and big, but often it is quite simple.
A personal example: One time I wanted to have a car for a few months, and I told God this. God answered quickly, but in an unexpected manner. I thought that God would arrange for someone to approach me, and offering me to borrow his or her car for a few months. Instead God reminded me of a couple who were going away for a few months, and asked me to ask them if I could rent their car while they where abroad. Hence I got the car I wanted for a few months and was also able to bless the couple with some extra money. Our God is a practical God!
Find out if it is God’s will
I have already mentioned this, but I thought I would like to talk about it in a separate paragraph. Because your faith starts where you know God’s will. If you are nor certain, you may want to take a peek in the Bible and find if you have a promise for it. Of course, there are situations where it is impossible to find a biblical promise, and therefore it can be hard to know God’s will. But I believe that the majority of the things we normally pray for have a promise attached to it from the Bible, and then it is God’s will to answer that prayer.
God’s will and healing
Healing can be a difficult issue. Many claim if someone who is sick is not healed, it is God’s will. God wanted to use the sickness in order to witness to other sick people. They forget that one would be more effective healed, and also an example of God’s love and power.
I believe strongly that God’s will is that everyone should be healed. That is consistent with God’s nature, and Jesus died not only for our sins but also for our sicknesses. Through the Lord’s prayer, we pray “Let your will be done on earth as it is in Heaven.” In Heaven there is no sickness so therefore it must be God’s will that His kingdom, which includes healing, will come to us.
The fact that some experience healing and some not is a mystery. Even though we can find some answers, it is impossible to fully address the question why some are healed and some not.
We should not add to our own and other’s burden by saying we do not have not enough faith. If this was the case, our aim should be to encourage faith, instead of condemning it. Jesus never condemned this way. He pointed out the disciples’ lack of faith, but also helped them strengthening their own faith.
Another claim that many make is that it is God’s will for you to be sick, if you are so. But if that’s the case it becomes very difficult to believe in God for healing. To believe in healing at least permits hope for recovering, but if sickness is God’s will there is no hope for getting better. If I then should pray for healing, I would pray against God’s will. This is a wrong perception of God’s nature because it reveals a God who will not give good gift to His children.
Over the last year I have struggled with a disease that no doctor so far have found any cure for, which at times can be very frustrating. Lots of people have prayed for me, with no apparent improvement. But I have decided to trust in God’s goodness, and that He one time will completely set me free. If it will delay I will still believe that God is who He says He is and that He will heal me.
We live in a westernized world
The facts that we live in a westernized world prime us for unbelief that will hinder our answer to prayer. We have grown up in a culture where the supernatural has been largely ignored or denied, and where mankind is the center of the world. This clearly affects our faith. Also, we are not as desperate for answers as a poor man in a developing country with no money or doctor or food. Such men realize they need supernatural help.
Prayer for a spouse
I want to devote a separate headline for this topic because this topic is not just between a person and God, but also includes a third person, the to-be spouse, and his or hers will. God can never force anyone to be interested in you, due to human free will. Hence, it is not always right to pray that the person, who you have fallen in love with, will do the same with you. However, you can always ask God to make that one special person aware of you, and to help you make the right moves. But do not forget that God will never force this person to be interested in you.
Do not let your feelings control you. That will often lead to a tendency to manipulate.
A girl who was really interested in a boy once approached him and said, “God has told me to marry you”. The boy thought a little about it before he replied “I have never heard anything about it”.
It is important that we are not manipulative, or manipulate. Instead, we should always act on God’s word and in His ways. Especially when it comes to girl-boy relationship manipulation can be especially damaging, with great negative consequences. God can tell us how to marry but if that is the case, God Himself will also notice the other person. Maybe not at the same time, so be absolutely sure that the other person feels the same way for you as you feel for him or her, before you tell what God has told you about you two as a couple. You can pray for God’s guidance over the person who God has appointed for you, and that He will prepare your future spouse for you. One suggestion can be to list the characters of the spouse of your wish.
Several may ask, “Is there only one person who is the right one for me?” I do not think so. I believe several are potentially right for you. You will pick the right one. Off course, since God is omniscient He knows whom you will end up with, but He has given us free will to decide our own spouse (however, He likes to have some influence). The concept of only one right for each person ignores human free will, and also makes the probability great for missing the one.
Seven advises of how to
experience a more exciting prayer life
I have written some advises of how you can change your prayer life, if you find it boring. These are not the only right answers, but things I have personally been found helpful.
1. Consider you prayer posture
To adjust your posture can help you be more enduring in prayer. Neither sitting nor kneeling nor walking nor any other posture is sacred. God listens anyway. However, some postures allow your attention to drift more easily. Lets look at some of the postures used in the Bible for praying:
Psalm 63:5
5My soul will be satisfied as with the richest of foods; with singing lips my mouth will praise you.
Psalm 95:6
6Come, let us bow down in worship, let us kneel before the LORD our Maker;
Psalm 99:9
9Exalt the LORD our God and worship at his holy mountain, for the LORD our God is holy.
The posture I have been trained to have is sitting on a chair with bowed head and folded hands. If this posture makes you sleepy, or makes it hard to concentrate, you may want to do something differently. One advice is to pray walking around (it is hard to fall asleep while walking). Another is to pray out loud. Then you will be more aware of what you are praying, and will be able to word your prayer better.
I often start my prayers by playing some praise music while I walk around and sing along or pray out loud. Often with proclamations about who God is. I also use my new tongues a lot.
Finding prayers in the Bible is many times a good thing. Do not just read through them though, but pray them out loud with your own words. For example, if you have found Psalm 23 you can pray: Thank you God, for being my shepherd. I shall not want. And so on.
However, remember that the posture is not the most important, but your hearts attitude!
2. Desire the baptism of the Holy Spirit
(for more on this point see also my lecture about the Holy Spirit).
When you are baptized in the Spirit you will receive a new prayer language. It is called speaking in tongues (for your own edification).
When you became a Christian you received a new Spirit and a new life inside of you. To be baptized in the Spirit means to liberate this life in you. (Joh 7:38)
Praying in tongues at least helps you with two things: When you run out of word, you can shift to tongues and still continue to pray. That is because you Spirit, who communicates through tongues with the Holy Spirit, never runs out of words. And, the Spirit helps us pray according to God’s heart. (Rom 8:26)
Praying in tongues edifies you. 1Chror 14:4
4He who speaks in a tongue edifies himself, but he who prophesies edifies the church.
The best thing you can do when a day is blue and difficult is to start praying in tongues, because then you will be edified. This has been my experience many times. Praying in tongues is to speak secrets with God.
That means among other things that the Devil will not understand what you pray for.
3. Start looking at yourself as God looks at you
Many Christians struggle with condemnation. They feel they should have prayed more, read more in the Bible, and witnessed more. They feel they are not good enough at what they are doing. They may say, “I should have done so much better, but I did not.”
One of the reasons for condemnation is a wrong perception of God. Many feel that “if I do not pray enough or do stuff good enough, good will not be satisfied with me.” This is far from the truth!
The truth is that God is just as satisfied with you either if you pray a minute or an hour. He loves you anyway. His highest desire is to have friendship with you, but He will never come with demands. It is your choice.
Nothing you do any time can stop God loving you!
There is nothing you can do to make Him love you more!
But still remember that you can turn your back on God. It is all your choice!
Here are some scriptures about how God looks at you:
Zeph 3:17
17The LORD your God is with you, he is mighty to save.
He will take great delight in you, he will quiet you with his love, he will rejoice over you with singing."
Is 43:1-5
But now, this is what the LORD says-- he who created you, O Jacob, he who formed you, O Israel: "Fear not, for I have redeemed you; I have summoned you by name; you are mine.
2When you pass through the waters I will be with you; and when you pass through the rivers, they will not sweep over you.
When you walk through the fire, you will not be burned; the flames will not set you ablaze.
3For I am the LORD, your God, the Holy One of Israel, your Savior; I give Egypt for your ransom, Cush and Seba in your stead.
4Since you are precious and honored in my sight, and because I love you, I will give men in exchange for you, and people in exchange for your life.
Is 62:5
…as a bridegroom rejoices over his bride, so will your God rejoice over you.
We can also add some scriptures from the Song of Solomon as this book talk about love in a fantastic way. As we read above God looks at us as a bride. With the same passionate love as the groom loves his bride, God loves us. Let us look at Song of Solomon chapter 2:10-14:
10My lover spoke and said to me,
"Arise, my darling,
my beautiful one, and come with me.
11See! The winter is past; the rains are over and gone.
12Flowers appear on the earth; the season of singing has come,
the cooing of doves is heard in our land.
13The fig tree forms its early fruit; the blossoming vines spread their fragrance.
Arise, come, my darling; my beautiful one, come with me."
14My dove in the clefts of the rock, in the hiding places on the mountainside,
show me your face, let me hear your voice;
for your voice is sweet, and your face is lovely.
Even though most Christians believe that God loves them and often cites that they are saved by grace, they still feel condemned and rejected by God. What can be the causes for this?
Authorities and people we are associated with influence us all. Parents, teachers, priests/pastors, colleagues and friends all to some extent influence us. If you have repeatedly felt being rejected by some of these people, a consequence may be that you will project this happening onto God. This is a possible cause. If that is the case for you, you have to start over again, and acknowledge who God really is and how He looks at you.
Remember that there is always room for you on God’s schedule, and He listens to your prayers!
4. Always live in the light
If you have not dealt with the sin in your life, you will not be able to have fellowship with God. It will hinder you confidence in God’s presence.
1Joh 3:21
21Dear friends, if our hearts do not condemn us, we have confidence before God
Every time you inter into prayer always admit the sins you are aware of. Pray that the Holy Spirit will show you what you ought to repent from. And when you have admitted your sins, then you have fellowship with God.
Let not the devil make you think otherwise.
1Joh 1:5-10
5This is the message we have heard from him and declare to you: God is light; in him there is no darkness at all. 6If we claim to have fellowship with him yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not live by the truth. 7But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all sin.
8If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. 9If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness. 10If we claim we have not sinned, we make him out to be a liar and his word has no place in our lives.
If you are struggling with a sin in your life that you often fall in, remember that Jesus conquered this sin for you. Therefore the power, which is within you, is strong enough to conquer it, through God’s Spirit living in you. If you pray when you have fallen: “You know that I have committed this same sin again. I realize that if I depend on Your help, and I want to repent and fight against the sin” then you live in the light and will be able to have fellowship with God.
5. Do not be controlled by feelings and emotions
As most Christians you have probably experienced being at some church camp, conference, retreat or something similar where you have strongly been met by God and ignited to serve Him. You make a decision that from now on that everything will be different. You will spend much more time in prayer and read more in the Bible and witness more. Usually it lasts for a couple of days before you encounter a defeat or some problems. Then you experience that all the good feelings quickly disappear. Hence, since the good feelings are history, you are starting drifting back to the old habits. If you recognize this pattern, you are most likely controlled by your feelings. An interesting question to ask is that if it is God or my feeling that disappear? The truth is off course that it is your feelings, because God is always there.
Rom 10:8:
8But what does it say? "The word is near you; it is in your mouth and in your heart," that is, the word of faith we are proclaiming:
Many Christians talk to God in a manner which suggest that He is far away in Heaven, instead of a person next to them. They speak to Him, instead of with Him. But God is not distant! He is with your side by His Holy Spirit, and you can talk to Him just like to any person. The reason why many have problems talking to God this way is that it feels unnatural to speak to someone invisible, or that they feel that God is distant.
Start praying even if you do not feel like it. If you experience trouble starting to pray one advise can be to start by singing or by playing songs that you may have learned at a church camp, or retreat or something and that help you experience God’s presence.
When feelings diminish and condemnation enters, resist!
6. Withstand in the evil day
Eph 6:13
13Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand.
1Pet 5:8-9
8Be self-controlled and alert. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour. 9Resist him, standing firm in the faith, because you know that your brothers throughout the world are undergoing the same kind of sufferings.
Train yourself to be able to withstand in the evil day. We have an enemy who does not want us to pray and who will do everything in his power to hinder that we do so. He can even tell you that God did something when He did not. He, the devil, is an expert making us feel bitter, give us a spirit of fear or make us feeling sorry for our self, so that there will be no inspiration or power left to pray.
One of his traps is to say that everything that happens it is the will of God. This is plain Christian fate theology.
Christian fate theology steals the joy of praying. Why should we pray if God has His way anyway? Why withstand in the evil day? If we did so, would we not be withstanding God?
The devil could also present thought like: “To pray is boring, what is the point? Nothing will happen if you pray. Remember when you prayed for healing, and the time when you prayed that Per from your work would accept Jesus? You became even sicker and Per became even more hostile to what you said. God does not listen to your prayers, so there is no point in praying.”
Another example is when you return from a church camp or conference and are “on fire” for Jesus, and you meet everyday blues. Then the devil presents thoughts like “now you are a lazy Christian again, nothing has changed and God is distant. If you pay attention to your feeling, they will confirm this.” All this is not God’s truth. I could have added several examples, but it all boils down to: Withstand in the evil day!
How should we withstand in the evil day? The first thing to do is to know the truth. For instance, if you are influenced by Christian fate theology, you need to realize that the Devil brings evil, not God. The Devil does not want God’s way with your life to come to pass, he will do everything he can do to hinder it.
Therefore it is crucial to know the truth, because the truth shall set you free!
Joh 8: 31-32
31To the Jews who had believed him, Jesus said, "If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. 32Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free."
Joh 17:17
17Sanctify them by the truth; your word is truth. 18As you sent me into the world, I have sent them into the world
The truth is in the Bible. Many lies have their roots in someone making theories based on experience. For example, if someone have prayed for healing and experienced that they were not healed, they may have made their own theory that their sickness is God’s will. But this is not the truth.
Acts 10:38:
38how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and power, and how he went around doing good and healing all who were under the power of the devil, because God was with him.
The sword in the spiritual armor (Eph 6:17) is the attacking weapon. It is an offensive weapon actively used in a war. If you are not trained in using it you will sacrifice looses due to the enemy’s cunning attacks. You use the sword by confessing and believing in the word of God.
7. Confessing of the truth
All truths found in the Bible can be useful, if you stick to them, and confess them.
Heb 4:2:
2For we also have had the gospel preached to us, just as they did; but the message they heard was of no value to them, because those who heard did not combine it with faith.
If, after you have fallen and prayed God for forgiveness, and Satan still attacks you with his lies, which make you fell condemned, you should confess the truth. Confess: “I thank you God for making me clean and righteous in front of you, thank you for not remembering my sins” (confess Psalm 103).
When you encounter adversity and problems remember to confess who is the Lord over the challenges. Let us examine some scriptures from the chapter we read from above, Rom 10:8-9
8But what does it say? "The word is near you; it is in your mouth and in your heart,"D that is, the word of faith we are proclaiming: 9That if you confess with your mouth, "Jesus is Lord," and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.
This scripture is not only for those who have not accepted Christ yet. The word used for salvation is wider than “just” receiving eternal life. Among other things, it also means whole, healthy, not injured, keep, safe, and leads into a spacious place, out of adversity.
If you experience fear, confess this scripture in the following way: “When I confess you Jesus as Lord over my fear I will be led out of this fear. Thank you Jesus for being the Lord over my fear.”
Confess that Jesus is the Lord over all your problems!
Diligently quote scriptures when you pray as it will increase your faith to conquer the problems.
Someone once claimed “We cannot confess everything positive, because if we get our expectations up and nothing happen, we will lose our courage.” I believe it to be crucial to confess God’s will in every situation, even though we do not experience it at the time. Endurance is a spiritual weapon, and endurance is the same as faith.
Stick your faith to God’s word! Then your trust and confidence will grow. To confess the truth will increase your faith, if you endure.
Jesus used the Lord’s Prayer when He taught His disciples to pray. This prayer has become a ritual for many, something you just pray without much mental effort to many. Earlier, I experienced this. I prayed the Lord’s Prayer for good conscience’s sake. If I forgot to pray one day, I prayed the Lord’s Prayer as a quick way out. I do not think that Jesus meant His followers to pray the Lord’s Prayer literal without thinking about the words, or ritual. I believe He emphasized some important principles for praying.
The structure and content of this prayer is worth paying attention to. It can really revolutionize your prayer life!
Before beginning the actual prayer Jesus start by giving His disciples some tips about how not to pray.
Matt 6:7-8
7And when you pray, do not keep on babbling like pagans, for they think they will be heard because of their many words. 8Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him.
This scripture deserve consideration. I have caught myself thinking that God will hear me if I only pray long enough. But He listens before we pray, He is aware of our thoughts. He wishes us to tell Him our desires, so that He can act and fulfill them.
This liberates us from trying to induce long and impressive and well-spoken prayers. God longs for short, straight to the point prayers. I do not think it is bad praying for an extended period of time, as God has told us to be enduring in prayer, but I think He wants us to be effective. You are able to pray for more if you do not pray for the same thing all the time. Another result of praying repeatedly over the same issue is boredom. No wonder that many prayer meetings are terribly boring.
Matt 6:9
9"This, then, is how you should pray: " `Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name,
The Lord’s Prayer starts by adoring God. The focus of our prayers should always begin by worshipping our God. When we choose to worship Jesus we hallow His name. One advice from me to you is to begin with some worship songs about God’s greatness and power. Play a CD if you do not fancy singing. If we begin our prayers with problems, they overwhelm us (and we might even start to worship them). Instead, if we begin by focusing on the almighty God, we realize that He is greater that our problems. This is a repeated, well-used principle throughout the Bible, whenever people pray. (For example Acts 4:23-71, and in many of the Psalms). One important thing: Then one you worship, you empower. When you worship God you will enable him to release His power.
Matt 6:10
10your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as it is in heaven.
This is the most powerful sentence in this prayer. Do you realize what would happen if God’s will was done generally and widely? No one would have been sick, no suffering or evil of any kind and there would be world peace. This is what Jesus told us to pray for. This is not praying for personal things but interceding for others. I experience it as a powerful prayer that I use a lot when I pray for nations. I pray: “Let your kingdom come upon this place, let your will be done here just like it would if this was the Heaven.” One of my favorite intercession songs is: Let your glory fall. Especially the line “Let your glory fall on this place, let it go forth from hear to the Nations.”
The evil and his servants, the demons, dislike this prayer a lot, because they want to guard the evil kingdom. There are two kingdoms: The kingdom of Darkness and the God’s kingdom, which is Heaven. We are called to bring Heaven down to earth. We can our self be the answers to this prayer by bringing God’s kingdom to a dark world without hope.
Matth 6:11
11Give us today our daily bread.
This is the personal needs we may have. Many find “our daily bread” very little concrete. For many western world people it my seem strange to pray for this. We have no need to pray for it. We are so privileged that we have everything we need for survival. But there is many out there who don’t have this and for them this prayer is really concrete.
Food is human’s most important need, but God wants us to approach Him with less important needs as well. So everyone can pray this prayer too.
Matth 6:12
12Forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors.
This verse is about leaving sin and forgiving those who have done anything unrightfully against us. In order to be forgiven our sins we must be willing to forgive those who have sinned against us. I have mentioned a couple of times the importance to deal with sin in order to receive answers to our prayers. We have to ask God to forgive us before we can receive forgiveness.
Matth 6:13a
And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one
Here we touch upon spiritual warfare. Jesus does not mean that God is the one who leads us into temptation, but this is a prayer of protection. We encounter temptations daily. These often come in a subtle way almost unnoticeable before they catch our thoughts. To pray for protection is important. We must constantly be on guard, not letting temptations enter our minds. It is not a sin to be tempted. Jesus was also tempted. But to give in to the temptations is sin. Temptations are the entrance to fall. However, you are able to resist it, especially if you choose to take the thought of temptation in to captivity immediately, instead of fooling around with them.
Matth 6:13b
for yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen
The end of the Lord’s prayer also includes a proclamation and focus of God’s nature and His almighty power.
What can the structure of this prayer teach us? It starts and ends by focusing on the powers of the one we pray to. Our own needs are in the middle. God’s desire is to have His kingdom among us.
Pray and you will receive
Both the Lord’s Prayer and the following scripture are quoted from the Sermon on the Mount. Jesus gave us some advices and encouragement in this sermon. Towards the end of chapter six Jesus speaks about trusting Him, and not worry about anything. Also the following chapter of Matthew contains a strong encouragement about praying:
Matt 7:7-8
7"Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. 8For everyone who asks receives; he who seeks finds; and to him who knocks, the door will be opened.
God’s wish is not only that we pray, but also that we act on our own prayers. If we seek, we will find and when we knock we do something to advance our prayer answer. One example is the man or woman praying for a mate. He or she cannot sit home and expect someone unknown to come to the door and say “Will you marry me?” Sometimes the answers to our prayers depend on our own actions.
Matt 7:9-11
9"Which of you, if his son asks for bread, will give him a stone? 10Or if he asks for a fish, will give him a snake? 11If you, then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give good gifts to those who ask him!
This verse helps us to brake down a wrong perception of God. God does not give us a stone when we pray for bread because He is a good father to us. He doesn’t make us sicker when we pray for healing. When we who are evil compared to good wants to give our children the best, how much more will not the perfect Father want the best for His children?
I have memorized these verses, and I use them frequently when I pray, because this is a powerful promise Jesus gave with His own mouth.
There is power in praying scriptures. You will find more verses wherever Jesus teach and encourage prayer. In addition there are all the promises in the Bible waiting to be used in prayer. I have collected some useful scriptures below. There are a lot more, and I urge you to try and find them.

Praise and worship is to confess the truth about God’s nature and His greatness towards us. This will sustain a faith in Him and His power. We saw this when considering the Lord’s Prayer as it starts with worshipping the nature of God.
We can see several prayers in the Bible containing praise despite the fact that the circumstances did not call for it. One example to begin with is a Psalm written by David, Psalm 69. He starts by stating his own situation, which is also important
Psalm 69:2-3
2I sink in the miry depths, where there is no foothold.
I have come into the deep waters; the floods engulf me.
3I am worn out calling for help; my throat is parched.
My eyes fail, looking for my God.
But he does not stop with the statement of His own situation. Despite his condition he says in the end of the Psalm
Psalm 69:31,34-36
31This will please the LORD more than an ox, more than a bull with its horns and hoofs.
34Let heaven and earth praise him, the seas and all that move in them,
35for God will save Zion and rebuild the cities of Judah. Then people will settle there and possess it;
36the children of his servants will inherit it, and those who love his name will dwell there.
Another person in the Bible confessing God’s promises even though everything had gone wrong is Habakkuk
Hab 3:17-19
17Though the fig tree does not bud and there are no grapes on the vines, though the olive crop fails and the fields produce no food, though there are no sheep in the pen and no cattle in the stalls,
18yet I will rejoice in the LORD, I will be joyful in God my Savior.
19The Sovereign LORD is my strength; he makes my feet like the feet of a deer, he enables me to go on the heights.
When can also look at some prayers in the New Testament. In acts we read what the first Christians prayed when they encountered problems
Acts 4:24-31
24When they heard this, they raised their voices together in prayer to God. "Sovereign Lord," they said, "you made the heaven and the earth and the sea, and everything in them. 25You spoke by the Holy Spirit through the mouth of your servant, our father David:
" `Why do the nations rage and the peoples plot in vain?
26The kings of the earth take their stand and the rulers gather together against the Lord and against his Anointed One.
27Indeed Herod and Pontius Pilate met together with the Gentiles and the people of Israel in this city to conspire against your holy servant Jesus, whom you anointed. 28They did what your power and will had decided beforehand should happen. 29Now, Lord, consider their threats and enable your servants to speak your word with great boldness. 30Stretch out your hand to heal and perform miraculous signs and wonders through the name of your holy servant Jesus."
31After they prayed, the place where they were meeting was shaken. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and spoke the word of God boldly.
Here they start by putting the focus on God’s greatness. When they get to the problem, they also confess how God will work it out.
When Paul and Silas where thrown beaten and naked in the deepest dungeon they did not mourn and complain when they prayed. They did not sing “Why have you o’ Jesus thrown us to jail where there is so much suffering? We are in terrible shape. Why us?” Instead they sang praise songs,
Acts 16:22-34:
22The crowd joined in the attack against Paul and Silas, and the magistrates ordered them to be stripped and beaten. 23After they had been severely flogged, they were thrown into prison, and the jailer was commanded to guard them carefully. 24Upon receiving such orders, he put them in the inner cell and fastened their feet in the stocks.
25About midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God, and the other prisoners were listening to them. 26Suddenly there was such a violent earthquake that the foundations of the prison were shaken. At once all the prison doors flew open, and everybody's chains came loose. 27The jailer woke up, and when he saw the prison doors open, he drew his sword and was about to kill himself because he thought the prisoners had escaped. 28But Paul shouted, "Don't harm yourself! We are all here!"
29The jailer called for lights, rushed in and fell trembling before Paul and Silas. 30He then brought them out and asked, "Sirs, what must I do to be saved?"
31They replied, "Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved--you and your household." 32Then they spoke the word of the Lord to him and to all the others in his house. 33At that hour of the night the jailer took them and washed their wounds; then immediately he and all his family were baptized. 34The jailer brought them into his house and set a meal before them; he was filled with joy because he had come to believe in God--he and his whole family.
As we can see in these last two scriptures there is power in praise. This is real spiritual warfare. Many think that spiritual warfare is to talk to daemons, but to worship God is the most powerful thing we can do. And as mentioned: Then one you worship, you empower. And when you worship God you empower Him to do what He wants.
Be encourage
Be encourage my friend to pray, that is the most exiting thing we can do as Christians (and actually all human, for the one that call upon the name of the Lord will be saved). And remember that prayer is all about relationship, relationship to the one that has created us. Don’t forget this, because then your prayer will be boring and without any power and you will become legalistic about prayer.
